Department Goals & Achievements
Chief Shelide is currently serving his eleventh year as the department’s Chief of Police. Working with Deputy Chief Jason Schmittler and Captain Patrick Barnard, Chief Shelide created a list of goals for the department, many of which have already been accomplished. Below is a list of goals that have been achieved under Chief Shelide’s tenure with the Shelby Township Police Department:
- Completed a $2,700,000 building expansion and renovation that provides us with a 7,100-sq. ft. addition to accommodate our expanding staff of 110 persons.
- Completed a Wellness Center addition to our police department. This addition was added to our existing police department in 2023. It is a state-of-the art gym facility that is available for use by all township employees to help promote a healthy lifestyle.
- Established a Captain position to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Increased staffing to 80 sworn officers (Increase from 60 sworn in January of 2015) to meet the growing needs of the community.
- Continuing the development of our commanders’ education at the Northwestern University School of Staff and Command and the National FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
- The addition of an afternoon sergeant and two patrol investigators for our Special Investigations Unit (S.I.U.).
- Purchased and installed 50 FLOCK automatic license plate readers in strategic locations throughout the township. These cameras have been instrumental in solving several high-profile cases.
- Created a Drone Unit for our department. The Drone Unit is comprised of police officers trained to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for tasks such as search and rescue, crime scene documentation, and surveillance, enhancing officer safety and improving situational awareness.
- Purchased a FARO Scanner, which takes 3-D imagery of major crime scenes and accident scenes.
- Created a Crisis Negotiation Unit. These crisis negotiators are specially trained police officers who use communication tactics to de-escalate and resolve high-risk situations peacefully, such as hostage situations, armed standoffs, and suicide attempts.
- Three canine officers who provide full coverage for all four platoons. One of the canines is certified in bomb/explosives detection.
- Utilize our certified A.L.I.C.E. instructors to train our township departments and local businesses within our community in active killer training tactics.
- Established a rescue task force with the Shelby Township Fire Department.
- Created a Tactical Response Unit that conducts high-risk operations for our department (arrests, barricaded gunmen, etc.)
- Creation of a Community Services Unit, to help foster relationships with residents and businesses in our community.
- Offer free R.A.D. (Rape, Aggression, Defense) classes to women in our township to empower them against sexual assaults.
- Enhanced our Community Service Unit with the addition of a bike patrol.
- Created a Youth Law Enforcement Academy for two consecutive weeks in the summer for township residents. This academy is an extremely popular program with kids in our community.
- Created a full-service Traffic Safety Bureau to help keep our roadways safer.
- Addition of a certified Drug Recognition Expert (D.R.E.) to our Traffic Safety Bureau. This officer, assigned to our Traffic Safety Bureau, was sent to specialized training to help keep our roadways safe from impaired drivers.
- Partnered with the Utica Community Schools adding one School Resource Officer (SRO) to each high school in the township.
- Creation of a Cadet Program, which lets our department observe future potential candidates for patrol officers. This program has been instrumental in keeping our patrol unit fully staffed.
- Issued cutting-edge Sig Sauer 9mm handguns to all officers both for duty and back-up/off duty.
- Creation of a Peer Support Team. This Peer Support Team offers officers confidential support by listening and offering a wide variety of resources to them.
- Continue our partnership with the DEA as we currently have two officers assigned to the DEA Task Force.
